About Bombardier Inc.

Bombardier is a Canadian aerospace manufacturer which primarily focuses on the production of business jets. In the past, Bombardier also manufactured commercial jets, trains, public transport vehicles, and recreational vehicles. As of the present, Bombardier operates with almost 60,000 employees who are spread across global facilities.

The company can trace its roots back to 1934 when Joseph-Armand Bombardier tragically lost his child due to a blizzard. From this loss, Bombardier began development for a vehicle that would be able to “float on snow”. As a culmination of his efforts, Bombardier produced the first snowmobile which relied on a drive system. Over the following years, Bombardier patented and sold snowmobiles and in 1942 L'Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée (Bombardier Snow Car Limited) was established. During World War II, Bombardier entered the arms industry due to wartime rationing regulations. They continued to produce snowmobiles after, however, and their more lightweight models released during the 1950s proved popular for sport and recreation.

After the passing of Armand Bombardier, his sons and sons-in-law took the mantle of running the company and reorganized and decentralized it. Through their restructuring, Bombardier adopted the use of computer inventories, accounting, billing, and sales incentivization. In 1969, the company went public as they were listed on the Montreal Exchange and Toronto Exchange.

Over the following decades, Bombardier began to greatly diversify their business with the acquisition of companies related to aviation, rail equipment, and public transportation. While the company has since sold off its rail equipment division and assets, Bombardier Aviation has remained a subsidiary company that develops business aircraft. In the present, Bombardier has continued their focus on their manufacturing efforts with their diverse subsidiaries.
