About Texas Instruments
Texas Instruments (TI) is an american technology company that specializes in the design and manufacture of semiconductors and integrated circuits. The company was founded in 1951 by Cecil H. Green, J. Erik Jonsson, Eugene McDermott, and Patrick E. Haggerty. Through the early 1950’s, TI entered the semiconductor industry after purchasing a germanium transistor patent license, bringing various industry experts into their company to begin research and manufacturing. The rest of the 1950’s were a great time for the company as they developed the first workable silicon transistor, transistor radio, and the world’s first integrated circuit. TI continued to grow in the 1960’s as they developed the first handheld calculator and continued to produce powerful TI chips. TI also contributed to the space race, with many of their components being used for the Apollo Lunar Exploration Module.
By the 1970s, TI was a major consumer electronics firm. During this period, TI patented a single-chip microprocessor, developed speech synthesis chips, entered the home computer market, and expanded in the defense sector. In the 1980’s, TI entered the artificial intelligence market, worked on missile contracts, and introduced and dominated the digital signal processor market. Leading into the 21st century, TI focused on the expansion of their product portfolio, acquired businesses and technologies, and continued to grow in international markets. The company also began to consolidate their business at this time, selling off their defense division and others, leaving themselves with their semiconductor and educational technology divisions. Recently, as of 2015, TI serves as the world’s biggest analog technology manufacturer, third biggest semiconductor manufacturer, and second biggest cell phone chip supplier.
