About Navistar International Corporation
Navistar International began following the merger between the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company and the Deering Harvester Company in 1902, resulting in the International Harvester Company, a diversified manufacturer of farming equipment, gas turbines, trucks, buses, construction equipment, and related components. In 1985, the company sold off its agricultural division, construction equipment division, solar division, and scout and light trucks business. The only remaining segment was the trucks and engines division. With a new business focus, the company renamed itself to Navistar International Corporation in 1986, a name that would remain until today.
The 80’s and 90’s proved to be a time of transformation for the company as they acquired the American Transportation Corporation, became a body and chassis manufacturer, and evolved into a leading manufacturer of diesel engines for school buses. Navistar created a subsidiary that focused solely on defense vehicles in 2003, led by Archie Massicotte, as the company became the sole supplier of MRAP armored vehicles to the military In 2005, Navistar purchased the Workhorse Company to re-enter the delivery van market, only to shut it down in 2012.
