About NEC Corporation
NEC Corporation has a long history beginning in 1899 when Nippon Electric Limited Partnership, later renamed NEC, was established by Kunihiko Iwadare and Takeshiro Maeda with a focus on producing, selling, and maintaining telephones and switches. In the beginning of the 20th century, NEC quickly saw expansion into foreign markets such as China, Korea, and the United States with their telephone services. Around this time, they also began importing appliances such as electric fans, kitchen appliances, and more. When the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake hit Japan, much of the telephone and telegraph infrastructure of the country was destroyed and NEC lost offices and workers. The Ministry of Communications of Japan soon after began an initiative to install automatic telephone switching systems and establish radio broadcasting in response to the earthquake. Automatic Telephone Manufacturing Co. released their first automatic switching system during this time and NEC quickly became their major sales agent. Leading up to World War II, NEC began their own radio communications system, as well as worked to provide the Ministry of Communications with the A-type switching system, the first of its kind in Japan. During the war, their plants were placed under military control and many were destroyed by the fire bombings. After the conclusion of the war, NEC began to find success and growth again as they expanded their Korean markets, as well as developed and researched integrated circuits in 1960. They also began their move into the Aerospace sector when they produced a satellite communications Earth station for Switzerland. In the 1980’s, along with their English name change to NEC, the company found success as the dominant leader of the PC industry in Japan, and their various branches worked to manufacture electronic products such as processors, printers, monitors, and video game consoles. With the start of the 21st century, NEC continued developing their semiconductor, computer, and electronics sectors with great success, seeing achievements such as building the fastest supercomputer in the market from 2002 to 2004, as well as building strong relationships and partnerships with other companies for joint ventures. In the present, NEC has seen continued expansion in foreign and domestic markets, as well as advancements in their various products and services for both consumers and enterprises.
