About Sikorsky Aircraft
Sikorsky Aircraft is a United States based manufacturer of aircraft that serve civilian and military applications. The company was first established in 1923 as the Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation, though they renamed themselves Sikorsky Manufacturing Company only two years later. After the release and success of their S-38 amphibious aircraft, the company reestablished themselves as Sikorsky Aviation Corporation and moved to Stratford, Connecticut. At this time, they also became a part of United Aircraft and Transport Corporation.
During their early years, Sikorsky primarily focused on the development of fixed-wing aircraft that were land based and amphibious. In the late 1930s, however, the company turned their attention to the development of a practical helicopter. In 1942, Sikorsky released the Sikorsky S-72 which was the first stable, fully controllable single-rotor helicopter. Since then, Sikorsky has served as a leading helicopter manufacturer with their various models that have served civilian applications, defense applications, and even the United States president.
Over the following decades, Sikorsky continued to focus on the development of various helicopters. Additionally, the company has also acquired various businesses as they restructured themselves and diversified their dealings. In 2015, Sikorsky was purchased by Lockheed Martin, and they have since continued operations as a subsidiary company.
