About Sprague Electric
Sprague Electric, now operating as a subsidiary of Vishay, was a United States based manufacturer of capacitors that served a variety of industries and applications. Sprague Electric was first established as the Sprague Specialties Company in 1926, and their initial products consisted of mini condensers, which were an early name for capacitors. Such mini condensers were often utilized within radio systems, aiding in noise filtering, tone control, and signal coupling. As the company grew, they also began creating capacitors for high power applications as well.
During the 1930’s, Sprague began to expand with a new plant in Massachusetts, and they soon became a recommended source for capacitors serving radio manufacturers, radio repair applications, and more. Leading into the 1940’s, Sprague Electric continued to grow in sales and production, and the company undertook many defense contracts and sales during World War II. With their participation in the effort, Sprague would continue on to assist in the Korean War, Cold War, and Space Age with their military grade products.
During the 1970’s, financial strain resulted in a restructuring of the company, and General Cable acquired Sprague Electric in 1976. In 1981, General Cable was acquired by Penn Central, and the company was later once again sold to Vishay. Currently, Sprague Electric continues to exist as a subsidiary under their parent company Vishay.
