About Atmel
Atmel’s story first began in 1984 when its founder George Perlegos established the company utilizing his experience from working within Intel’s memory group. In the beginning, Atmel worked alongside companies such as Sanyo and General Instrument as a fabless company for their chip wafer needs. Their initial technology was impressive, often surpassing competitors in both power usage and performance. The 1990’s were eventful years for Atmel, including much expansion, their initial public offering, and their entrance into the microprocessor market. During the 2000’s, Atmel underwent much restructuring, both selling and acquiring multiple businesses as they refined their divisions. In 2016, Atmel was acquired by Microchip, who had previously attempted to acquire them in 2008. After negotiating, Atmel merged with Microchip in July 2016 and remains with them to this day.
