About SAE International
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) is a United States based professional association that is globally active, establishing and developing standards for a variety of engineering industries. SAE was first established in 1905, born out of a desire for solutions for common technical design problems that many auto manufacturers faced at the time. Under the leadership of Andrew L. Riker and Henry Ford, the Society of Automotive Engineers was founded, spearheading initiatives to create standardization.
During their first decade, SAE created various comprehensive papers, and their membership steadily grew. As they became more popular, multiple people representing other industries sought to join SAE, expanding their oversight to include many other types of mobility related applications. At this time, the group renamed themselves the Society of Automotive Engineers to represent their diverse set of covered industries. Leading into the present, SAE has continued to grow in both membership and size, establishing presence in over 80 counties with more than 138,000 members in total.
